How Faith Dating cut catfish review time without losing the human eye

Faith Dating is built on trust. People join looking for a relationship grounded in shared faith, not a stranger who borrowed someone else’s face. As the app grew beyond the Netherlands, that trust came under pressure.

Growth abroad, and a familiar problem at scale

Faith Dating started in the Netherlands and expanded internationally. More markets meant more genuine members, and a lot more people trying to game the system.

The pattern was familiar to anyone who has moderated a dating product: fake profiles posing as Western women or men, often run from scam networks abroad. The goal was rarely romance. It was a conversation, a bond, and eventually money.

Common sense still caught a lot of them. Awkward bios, recycled stories, photos that didn’t quite fit. But volume climbed, and “common sense” turned into hours of admin work every week.

When looking carefully stopped being enough

Two kinds of images made manual review especially hard.

First: AI-generated faces. They’re getting good enough that a tired moderator on a late shift can’t always tell a synthetic portrait from a real one. The gap that used to feel obvious is closing.

Second: photos that weren’t AI at all: influencer and social images lifted from the open web. They look polished, consistent, and completely legitimate if you don’t happen to recognize the person. For Faith Dating’s team, those were often the ones that slipped through a quick visual check.

The team didn’t need another dashboard full of features. They needed something that answered a narrow question well: is this profile photo trustworthy?

Finding nepper.io

That’s when they found nepper.io. The pitch was simple: an authenticity report focused on what actually matters for fake-user detection (AI-generated faces, deepfakes, influencer and stock reuse, and related scam signals) without turning into a full moderation platform.

Faith Dating cared about the data coming back, and about how fast it came back. They already knew how to act on a clear signal. They just needed the signal to be reliable.

What stood out in practice

Two detectors changed the day-to-day most.

Influencer and reused-image matches caught the “looks fine to a human” cases: real photos that still shouldn’t be on a dating profile. Those were exactly the ones that used to burn review time, because nothing about the face screamed fake.

AI face detection caught the other side: highly realistic generated portraits that would have passed a casual glance. Together, those signals covered both the stolen-real and the synthetic-fake problem.

Results came back near instantly, which meant Faith Dating could automate actions on the analysis instead of parking every upload in a human queue.

Integration without drama

The integration itself was straightforward. Faith Dating plugged the API into their existing profile-photo flow and started acting on the report nepper returned.

There was no long rewrite of their moderation stack. The win was narrower and more useful: less time spent staring at photos, more confidence when something got flagged, and fewer scam conversations that ever started.

In their admin tools, moderators see the authenticity score and labels next to the profile, so a review is a glance, not a research project.

What changed for the team

Administrating the platform got lighter. Reviewers still matter. Faith Dating isn’t trying to remove human judgment entirely, but they’re no longer the first line of defense against every upload that looks vaguely suspicious.

For a product where trust is the product, that matters. Members join Faith Dating expecting the people they meet to be real. Keeping that promise at international scale is hard work. Having a focused authenticity check in the loop made that work manageable again.

nepper delivers exactly the data we need, without the noise. They catch realistic AI faces and influencer photos we would have missed, and the results come back fast enough to act on.
